Pfizer, the maker of Viagra, has increased its sales for the first time in three months. The drugmaker has said it will spend $8.6 billion on marketing in the U. S., with a total of $8.6 billion in cash and a net loss of $8.3 billion, and expects sales to come in at between $4.5 billion and $5.0 billion.
Pfizer’s new $8.6 billion deal with Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, which makes Pfizer’s generic version of Viagra, will reduce its generic competition by at least 20 percent, Pfizer said in a Tuesday report. Teva, which was once the largest maker of generic drugs, will use its cash and net losses from the deal to fund marketing and sales.
Pfizer said it has negotiated a deal to enter the U. S. and will begin selling Viagra in the country on Nov. 27, when Pfizer’s patent expiry runs Dec. 31, 2012.
Pfizer said the deal will also help strengthen its relationship with the drugmaker, which has been struggling to get the drugs on the market for more than 10 years.
“We’re pleased with the completion of this deal,” said Ian Read, Pfizer’s chairman and chief executive.
In a statement, Pfizer said: “Pfizer remains committed to bringing new medicines to market that provide patients with the same benefits and effects as their brand-name counterparts. We are pleased with the progress made in the U. marketing of Viagra and are working with other pharmaceutical companies to improve our product portfolio and expand our market presence.”
The statement continued, “Pfizer remains committed to achieving its patients’ needs with the highest level of patient satisfaction and providing affordable medicines to all who rely on Viagra to treat their condition.”
The company also said it was “working closely with our worldwide sales force to achieve the best possible results for our patients and achieve the best possible financial results, both direct and indirect, for our medicines.”
Viagra is a brand name for the drug sildenafil, a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Pfizer said it will focus on delivering the drugs to millions of men worldwide and will continue to market them in the United States and Canada and Europe.
In February, the New York Times reported that the drugmaker was looking to raise cash to settle a federal patent challenge brought by patent expiry. Pfizer said it was interested in bringing the patent challenge to the U. Supreme Court, where it is expected to appeal. The company has not responded to the Times report.
Pfizer also has an agreement with Teva to acquire its generic drug business for $2.75 billion.
The company said that when it begins selling its generic version of Viagra in the U. S., it will invest $5 billion into marketing its product and, in the U. S., will spend $2.75 billion to acquire international markets.
Last year, Pfizer said it spent $10.8 billion on sales promotion and marketing for Viagra, up from $7.5 billion in the same period in 2013. The drugmaker also spent $1.1 billion in sales in 2012 and 2013 for marketing and sales of Viagra.
Pfizer is marketing its product in more than 140 countries and has more than 1,000 sales in 120 countries.Pfizer said U. Food and Drug Administration approval of Viagra was expected in the fourth quarter and the fourth quarter of 2013, and it was expected to be available for generic competition in the U. in the next two years. Viagra’s U. patent for the drug has expired and it is expected to become available in late 2013 or early 2014.
