San Antonio, Texas (AP) — U. S. health officials are looking to the city's medical community for assistance after a Texas man began overdosing on Viagra, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Scott Pizzutti, 41, is being treated for his diabetes, hypertension and angina. The former has caused him to have heart palpitations, and the latter has caused him to have a heart attack, according to a letter Pizzutti received from the city's medical community.
"We're trying to get as much information out there as possible before we make any decisions," said city spokesman Mike Schatzberg.
The Texas Department of Public Health says the drug was used to treat erectile dysfunction in 1998, and Pizzutti was prescribed the drug to treat the condition in 2003.
The city officials' letter, sent to the nation's top health care official, is the first in a series of health reports that detail the use of Viagra in more than 100 men with diabetes and high blood pressure.
The public health department is reviewing the public records and medical records of more than 100 men, and will begin providing a new report in April.
The city has a public health program, which offers free medical attention to men who are experiencing health issues. It also offers men who are taking medications, such as nitrates, or who have taken certain drugs that the drug is known for.
In 1998, about 2,400 people died of heart problems in the United States. In 2003, that number increased to more than 10,000.
The men who were taking the drug were all male, and nearly all of them had diabetes, hypertension, angina and other heart issues, according to the letter.
In a letter, the health department says the men are taking "an important step" in trying to find a solution for their condition.
"We're working with the medical community and they're going to work with us, and they're going to be there as well, so that's what we're trying to do," said Pizzutti, who is in a private psychiatric unit for the public health department.
According to the letter, the men are now being treated for diabetes and hypertension, which is the condition in which a man has difficulty getting and keeping an erection.
Sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Viagra, was not prescribed to the men, Schatzberg said.
He did note that Viagra is the only drug that has been shown to be effective in treating heart problems in men with diabetes and high blood pressure.
"If you take an ED medication like Viagra, you should not be taking an ED medication like nitrates," he said.
Pizzutti, who is a city employee, said he was taking Viagra because he was worried about a sudden increase in blood pressure.
"I've heard it's a little bit risky to take this medication," he said.
When Pizzutti was asked if he was taking the drug, he said he was, but he did not want to talk about it.
"I just feel like we need to talk about it," he said.
In a letter to the nation's health department, which was sent to the nation's health departments in April, the department says the department is reviewing all available public records.
The letter says it was sent in response to a request for an expedited report of an urgent medical emergency involving nearly 100 men in the Austin City area, including one man in a nursing home.
The report, which has not yet been made public, said the man was overdosing on Viagra. The drug was not prescribed to him, Schatzberg said.
The letter says the man's condition was that he had diabetes and hypertension, and that he had angina and high blood pressure.
The department says the man has been taking Viagra since he was 18 years old, but it is not known if he has taken it for more than six months.
Officials have not received any reports of any adverse events with the drug.
A spokeswoman for the department said they did not know about the man's condition.
"We're trying to get as much information out there as possible before we make any decisions," said Schatzberg, who said the city's medical community was already working to make its own reports available.

The Food and Drug Administration said Friday it would begin imposing a state-of-the-art erectile dysfunction drug ban on all drugs sold on U. S. prescription, over-the-counter and non-prescription marketplaces.
The move comes after a similar federal ban on erectile dysfunction drugs was announced last week.
Erectile dysfunction drug sales have been a significant source of demand for millions of men nationwide.
But a new federal law that would require pharmacists and physicians to list erectile dysfunction drugs and the drugs’ prices have left many men unaware of what the new ban is.
“We’re seeing a large number of men who are being forced to choose between erectile dysfunction and non-erectile dysfunction,” said Jim Sage, a spokesman for the National Organization for Sexual Health, which has worked to help millions of men avoid the embarrassing, sometimes embarrassing, sexual interaction that can come with prescription drugs.
Sage said he’s not surprised by the number of men who are actually taking erectile dysfunction drugs.
“This is a national problem,” he said. “It’s going to take time for these people to understand the risks involved in taking these drugs.”
Since Viagra’s patent expired in 1998, the market for erectile dysfunction drugs has expanded to include older pills, erectile dysfunction drugs that have not yet been approved by the FDA.

Viagra has also experienced a price-gouge problem in recent months due to the expiration of the Pfizer patent for the drug. The drug market for erectile dysfunction drugs has been growing as the Food and Drug Administration has increased the amount of generic drugs that the agency has approved.
Viagra has also experienced price-gouge problems since the drug’s patent expired. The company said its U. sales of Viagra climbed from $3.50 in the second quarter of 2007 to more than $6.30 in the first quarter of 2010.
Since then, the FDA has approved other ED drugs, including Staxyn and Levitra, and Stendra, an anti-spasmodic medication that helps men get erections by stimulating the production of a certain body’s natural chemical,,.

An FDA spokesman said the agency has studied the drugs in larger clinical trials and that it has not found an increase in side effects.
“We are aware of this problem and are working with pharmaceutical companies to minimize these risks,” he said. “We will work closely with the FDA to ensure the products and the policies of the agency are in place to ensure that they are not used for the purposes described in this regulation.”
